Original watercolour of Methana, the volcanic walk. Part of mainland Greece, in the Saronic gulf.
Methana the volcanic walk
Taken before sunrise looking out across the beautiful Saronic gulf. The volcanic rocks form some amazing shapes of browns and blacks. These rough edges are soften by the cool greens growing amongst them. The seas and islands in the distance are hazy with the morning mist.
For this particular painting I used a natural sponge for the vegetation. Natural sponges are great as there uninformed bubbles make for a much more realistic look.
For the rocks I used a card to scrape out the formations. I often soften these with a damp brush after as I find them a little jarring without this. Sometimes the shadow side needs to be a little darker too.
I hope you like it any questions please ask, always happy to help.
